Upcoming Webinar: Servicers Prep for Shift in Political Tides 

An upcoming event in the Five Star Institute Webinar Series, set for Thursday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m. Central and held in partnership with Stavvy, will focus on “Election Year Strategies: Preparing Mortgage Servicing for Policy Flux.”

The Five Star Institute Webinar Series aims to broaden the horizons of the mortgage industry, as a source for complimentary insights and education about critical industry topics led by subject-matter experts.

With the servicing industry having undergone multiple policy updates over the past several months, this webinar will offer mortgage servicers insight into managing the impact of these changes.

Servicers navigate a changing landscape

The Five Star Institute welcomes a panel of experts to the webinar, including Lisa Banal, Executive Director, Assistant General Counsel with Chase; John Bell III, Executive Director, Loan Guaranty Service with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Shane Hartzler, EVP, Head of Servicing for Stavvy; and Ryan McGuinness. Mortgage Servicing Policy Director for Freddie Mac. The panel will dissect the expected regulatory changes, with a special focus on how technology can play a critical role in navigating these complexities. Panelists will discuss how to stay ahead of policy updates, implement technological solutions for compliance and efficiency, and turn regulatory challenges into opportunities for growth and improved service.

Meet the speakers

Lisa Banal, Executive Director and Assistant General Counsel in JP Morgan Chase Bank, supports the default servicing legal team and is responsible for providing legal advice to the residential mortgage loan servicing business relating to Regulation X and loss mitigation. Banal has a Juris Doctorate from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

John Bell III began serving as Executive Director, Loan Guaranty Service, on June 21, 2022 for the Department of Veterans Affairs. In his role, he is responsible for delivering VA home loan benefits to his fellow veterans. Bell has extensive mortgage industry experience, having served in leadership roles with nationwide lenders for more than 20 years before starting his career with VA in 2010. Bell’s top priorities are ensuring that VA home loan benefits are the product of choice for veterans and that Loan Guaranty is the VA program of choice for his staff. As Deputy Director, Bell was instrumental in VA Loan Guaranty Service’s fast response during the COVID-19 pandemic through frequent communications and the issuance of guidance which ensured that home loan benefits continued to be delivered to veterans without delay and reassured industry partners at this critical time.

Shane Hartzler is currently EVP of Servicing at Stavvy, and has a background in servicing and origination leadership roles at Fannie Mae. Hartzler has experience in digital mortgage strategy and operations. He played a key role in Fannie Mae’s digital transformation efforts and led product development initiatives under the Making Home Affordable program. His focus is on identifying market needs and driving innovation to enhance consumer experiences and streamline servicing workflows.

Ryan McGuinness serves as a Mortgage Servicing Policy Director in Freddie Mac’s Single-Family Servicing Division, responsible for recommending, developing, communicating, implementing, and monitoring servicing policies and requirements. McGuinness has been with Freddie Mac for nearly 16 years, and has devoted most of that time to policy work. Prior to joining the Servicing Policy team, McGuinness spent more than three years as a mortgage fraud investigator in Freddie Mac’s Fraud Investigation Division, helping to develop most of Freddie Mac’s loss mitigation and foreclosure prevention policies currently in place, including extensive contributions to disaster and COVID-19 relief efforts and the creation of the Payment Deferral.
